Co-op Listening Session highlights goal accomplishments and transition to new facility

The Oneota Co-op held a Member Listening Session Monday night prior to its regular monthly board meeting in its new Kitchen Classroom at 308 W. Main. A small group of members present heard from the board members about the accomplishment of  goals that had been set a couple years ago. These included the revision of mission and "end" statements; support of a local food hub and processing center (now operating in West Union); development of a kitchen classroom; and establishment of a patrons' dividend program. Also noted were works in progress including the reduction of carbon footprint, and increasing retention of employees.

The board reviewed its decision not to expand operations to Lanesboro, noting it was a good decision, particularly in light of current Water Street expansion. However, the Co-op is pleased to be assisting the Lanesboro group in some purchasing efforts.

Considerable time was spent discussing the status of expansion, noting that the Co-op did not feel pressed to act prematurely in completion of the expansion, particularly since they did not want to strap themselves for cash in the projects and were in a position that cash was being set aside daily to contribute to the next steps. The approximately 750 square foot kitchen is now in operation. A similar sized space between that kitchen and the existing retail space will be the next space to be renovated. Input (including consulting) is currently being sought regarding the best integration of the space, but one hoped for outcome (whether in that space directly or elsewhere) is the development of a fresh meat counter.

The upstairs space above the newly acquired property is currently rented to tenants, but long term plans would utilize that space for offices currently located in the Co-op basement. Plans are unclear about the additional basement facilities but it could be used for storage or refrigeration.
