Cedar Rapids City Councilwoman Monica Vernon, the Democratic Party's candidate for Lieutenant Governor in November, announced Thursday she is running for Congress in Iowa's First District in 2016.  The First District includes all of Winneshiek County.

Vernon last year ran in the Democratic Party primary for the Congressional seat.  She lost to Pat Murphy, who lost in November to Republican Rod Blum.  Blum was sworn into office on Tuesday, meaning he had less than one week without a political opponent.

In announcing her candidacy Vernon said. "I'm proud of my work growing a small business, helping local communities recover from a devastating flood and working to create jobs, increase access to affordable housing and improve education for students in our district."
