The Winneshiek County Board has established procedures for filling the upcoming Sheriff's vacancy. Longtime Sheriff Leon Bohr has announced his plans to retire on March 31st.
Acting on advice from County Attorney Andy Van Der Maaten, the board on Monday agreed to publish a public notice about the vacancy during the week of March 16th. People interested in the job would be asked to submit resumes to the county board. Supervisors then would hold interviews with the candidates on Wednesday, March 25th, and would make an appointment at a special meeting April 1st.
At this point, there are no plans to hold a special election to fill the position, but a special election would be scheduled if a petition with the valid signatures of 827 Winneshiek County voters was presented to the county.
