Liquor consumption was down in Winneshiek County during 2014, although neighboring counties showed consumption increases.
Figures released by the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division show the average Winneshiek County residents over the age of 21 consumed 1.80 gallons of hard liquor during 2014. That was a decline of 2/100ths of a gallon from 2013.
Still, all surrounding counties reported increases in hard liquor consumption during 2014. Clayton County saw an 11 percent increase, although its consumption is almost half that per person in Winneshiek County. The heaviest users of hard liquor are Howard County residents, who consumed nearly two and a half gallons of hard liquor during 2014—a 4.6 percent increase from 2013 and 15th per person out of Iowa's 99 counties.
Winneshiek County does have the largest number of people over the age of 21 of any of the six northeastmost counties in Iowa, so a total of over 27,000 gallons of hard liquor were sold in Winneshiek County in 2014.
