What does the future of the South Winneshiek School District hold? That's the question that will be tackled by a 30-member advisory group.
An organizational meeting of the group was held Monday night in Calmar. 30 people showed up, despite the snowfall. Others have already volunteered for the group, so organizers will work to have representation from students, parents, staff members and community members on the advisory group. Other volunteers may be assigned to a subcommittee or work group.
Superintendent Clark Goltz says the "Future Direction Committee" will be asked to make a recommendation to the South Winneshiek School Board in late fall. Goltz says the group will be asked to predict the future financial forecast for the school district and to make a recommendation on whether the school district needs to begin whole grade sharing, partial day sharing or the formation of a charter school. Goltz says the school district is in good shape now, but the school board is taking a "proactive stance" on meeting future challenges.
