Should recreational trails in Winneshiek County be posted as being "Smoke-Free?" Both the Decorah Parks & Recreation Board and the Trails of Winneshiek 28e Board discussed that issue on Wednesday. Members of the two boards decided that putting up "No Smoking" signs wasn't necessary because there have been no incidents of cigarette butts left on area trails.
The Iowa Smokefree Air Act prohibits smoking in all enclosed public places and workplaces and in some outdoor areas. Smoking is allowed on "hiking trails," but it has not been determined whether recreational trails fall into that category. City and county officials say since there haven't been any problems on the trail yet, they don't feel it's necessary to post signs.
