Volunteer tax preparers are being sought

Posted: Wed, Dec 17, 2014 3:46 PM

The Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is looking for volunteers to file income tax returns for the low- to middle-income and elderly taxpayers in Allamakee, Howard or Winneshiek County.

Volunteers receive training and certification.  They then get to choose where they would like to volunteer and how much time they will spend volunteering.  The average commitment is 4-8 hours a week during the tax season.

Training will be provided weekly during the month of January with the tax season beginning the first week in February and running through mid-April.  The trainings will be held in Decorah with the tax assistance services being provided one day a week at the Cresco or Postville Library and two days a week at the Decorah Library.

The AARP tax program utilizes a team approach with two certified tax preparers working together on each return.  Volunteers should have moderate computer skills and enjoy working with numbers and be able to respect the privacy of persons who utilize the service.  Volunteers serve through Northeast Iowa RSVP Volunteer Program, with recruitment targeting persons age 55 and older.
