The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department is blaming very heavy fog and wet roadways for an accident Saturday evening on Highway 24 south of Fort Atkinson.
Deputies say a Waterloo man, Jeff Haler, was using the right side white highway marker as a guide while driving in the fog. However, at 295th Avenue Haler started to curve to the right, but realized too late that Highway 24 didn't have such a sharp turn. Haler ran off the roadway, entered the ditch and struck the ditch embankment.
Haler was able to exit his vehicle, but Julie Haler complained of back pain. She stayed in the vehicle until firefighters and an ambulance arrived. Both Halers were taken to Winneshiek Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
