Veteran Social Security benefits to increase, but it's not automatic

Posted: Wed, Dec 3, 2014 7:17 PM

The Winneshiek County Veterans Affairs Office is letting area veterans know about increased Social Security benefits for veterans.

If you served on active duty between January 1st, 1957 to December 31st, 2001, and are planning for retirement, you may qualify for a higher social security payment.   You must submit a copy of your DD Form 214 to the Social Security Office –  and you must ask for this benefit to receive it, it is not automatic.

For questions, contact the Social Security Office at 1-855-221-3522, or log on http://www.ssa.gov/retire2/military.htm.
