It's getting harder and harder for volunteer fire departments to find people willing to become members. The Decorah Fire Department is no exception.
Fire Chief Mike Ashbacher says being a member of a fire department "is a big time commitment." It's also harder to find firefighters because of how busy lifestyles have gotten.
The Decorah Fire Department would like to have 35 members, but is currently at 31. With two of the current firefighters retiring in the next six months, that number will drop to 29. Ashbacher says that's not a problem now because the Decorah Fire Department now automatically contacts neighboring fire departments any time there is a structure fire to ask for mutual aid.
