More than 40 trees were planted along Montgomery Street on Saturday morning.
The work was done by Troop 66 Boy Scouts and leaders, Green Iowa Americorp workers, Luther College volunteers and members of the Decorah Tree Board.
Volunteer Mary Jane Michels, who has worked with Troop 66 to weed along the hillside on Montgomery Street, brought the suggestion to the Tree Board to get the planting project going. Meredith Borchardt from Trees Forever lead the planting with a demonstration of proper tree planting techniques.
The project was funded by a matching grant from Trees Forever and the Alliant Energy Branching Out program. The flowering trees will be help to stabilize the hillside on the Winneshiek County property near the Winneshiek Medical Center and provide color, shade, and bird habitat for many years to come!
If you or your organization would like to help plant more trees in boulevards in the City of Decorah, contact the City Clerk's office or Tree Board President Heidi Cook.
