Joan e-mails: "How safe is the Winneshiek County courthouse? What types of security measures are in place? Small surveillance cameras on the building would not jeopardize the historic aspect of the courthouse. If they're going to use a metal detection screener for that murder trial, is that temporary or will it remain in the court house after the trial?
Mr. Answer Person says: "Yours is a timely question-- County officials have been discussing this issue. Additional security measures—including a metal detection screener—will be in place for January's Fazzino murder trial. Otherwise it's a bit of a struggle to integrate security measures into the historic courthouse.
Your suggestion of surveillance cameras and a permanent metal detector are steps that could be taken in the future. Right now nothing is planned besides having the metal detector in place for the Fazzino murder trial--but that could change.
