The president of the State Association for the Preservation of Iowa Cemeteries, Steve Story, has updated members of the Hannah Lee Chapter of Daughters of the American Resolution about Pioneer Cemetery Commissions in Iowa.
Story told the group three criteria exist for creation of a Pioneer Cemetery Commission in any Iowa county. First, there must be a group of people wanting such a commission. Second, there must be people physically able to do the work required. Finally, the Board of Supervisors must see this as a good idea.
Story also told group members that Pioneer Cemetery Commissions must always work to replace people who leave the commissions. They also must provide for care for the cemeteries once the restoration is completed. Finally, Story says many commissions tackle the tough questions involving the need for public access to cemeteries located on private property.
