How to dispose of your fallen leaves

It's October, the time of the year in Decorah when trees begin to shed their leaves.

The City of Decorah's Street Department says you can bag your leaves and bring them to the city's Yard Waste Site on Trout Run Road on Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. until noon.

Another option is to bring your leaves to the City Street Shop on Railroad Avenue.  There is part of an open shed that is being used as a leaf bin through November 15th.

One final option is to push your leaves onto the curb for pickup, but Street Superintendent Dave Tollefson says "we try to not ecourage people (to do that)."  He explains that leaves get wet when it rains and can add to flooding problems.  Leaf pickup also adds another duty to an already-busy Street Department.

So it is legal to push leaves into the street for pickup--but city workers would prefer that you didn't.
