Will Winneshiek County still host a murder trial?

Posted: Sun, Oct 5, 2014 8:44 PM

Winneshiek County jurors might not be asked to decide the fate of a Boone man accused of murdering his wife.

The trial of  40-year-old Alexander Fazzino, which had been set for later this month in Winneshiek County on a change of venue, has been postponed while a judge decides whether to move the trial to a different county.

The Ames Tribune reports that prosecutors and defense attorneys are arguing whether Winneshiek County residents have heard too much information about the case to not have already formed an opinion about it.

District Court Judge Michael Moon has not issued a ruling on the request to move the trial out of Winneshiek County, but he did indicate he would pick a date in January for the trial to be held.

The trial was scheduled to begin later this month in Winneshiek County in northeast Iowa, however, prosecutors have asked the trial to be moved once again after one of Fazzino's defense attorneys did a television interview discussing details of the case.

This is the third delay, and potentially third venue change, for Fazzino, 40, formerly of Boone, who is accused of killing his wife, Emily Fazzino, in late January 2012. Emily Fazzino was found dead in the couple's Boone home after Alexander Fazzino called 911.

He was arrested over a year later following an investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and charged with first-degree murder.
