Readers continue to weigh in on Monday's decorahnews.com story (http://www.decorahnews.com/news-stories/2014/09/8993.html) about cars parking on the lawn at city parks. Liam Houdek is the latest to submit a Letter to the Editor:
"It is disrespectful to drive or park on the lawn of a citypark--that is not even debatable. Would it not be disrespectful to drive/parkon anyone's lawn? Surely there are a few exceptions for people of differentabilities or parks service personnel etc... but that park is well maintained bycity employees with city taxpayer money. It is designed as space for everyoneto access and enjoy an open lawn, not just to sit at a picnic shelter and lookat parked vehicles. There are many beautiful trees in that park includingmultiple new young trees., These will all suffer from the compaction of soil byvehicles driving and parking on them. It also causes ruts and grooves whichcreate challenges and work for park service personnel.
I am thrilled people areusing the park and athletic fields but there are three accessory parking lotsacross the street. I think a reasonable adult could park in one of those threelots, which are designed for parking of excess vehicles and then cross pulpitrock rd to the athletic fields and events. This would leave the lawn of thepark in the same condition it was found in upon arrival, which should be thegoal of every park visitor.
On another note not specifically related to this event, ifvisitors to the parks could do a better job of cleaning up after themselves, Icould spend more time enjoying the parks and less time collecting trash andcigarette butts each visit. I and many other people of this valley wouldtruly appreciate the effort. These parks were dedicated for everyone to enjoyfor many years to come. Let's honor that intention and help keep them that way. They are OUR city parks after all!
