Who is illegally dumping garbage in Kendallville? Winneshiek County officials are trying to find out.
A dumpster is set out in Kendallville at 3453 324th Avenuefrom 7:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. every Wednesday. But Winneshiek County Landfill Director Dave Hageman says for the past five or six weeks someone has been leaving two or three truckloads of building material at the location on Tuesday nights. Lately the garbage has also included garbage bags with food and household items.
Hageman says the county has had good luck in the eight or nine years it has operated the dumpsters. "It's worked out so well, we'd hate to have a few people run it," he says.
"No trespassing" signs are being made for the Kendallville site that inform people that the site is off-limits except during the 7:00 a.m.to 2:00 p.m. Wednesday hours. Violations of the sign could result in a fine of up to $100. Hageman is hoping the signs will work. "I don' twant one or two people to spoil it for everyone else," he says.
