August was hot and wet in Decorah

From a weather standpoint, there were two separate Augusts in Decorah this year.

From August 1st through August 18th, only half an inch of rain fell.  But Decorah weather observer Richard Bernatz says the last two weeks of the month more than made up for the first two weeks.  Bernatz says over four inches of rain fell during the last two weeks of the month, making the monthly rainfall total 4.77 inches--or 3/4ths of an inch more than normal.  Five days of more than half an inch of rain meant the difference, including one day (August 23rd) when 0.90 inches of rain fell.

While August temperatures were 1.4 degrees warmer than normal, the summer ended on an unusually cool note.  Only two days from June 1st through August 31st had high temperatures of 90 degrees or more.  A normal summer has 14 to 15 days of 90 degrees or warmer, with the summer of 1910 having 56 such days.

For the past 12 months, Decorah has been cooler and wetter than normal.
