First year students will arrive on the Luther College campus on Saturday. New faculty and staff members have already gotten to work.
Luther College President Dr. Paula Carlson noted Thursday in her "State of the College" address that the newcomers were bringing with them their "energy, talent and hopes for the future." She should know--the speech marked the first official ceremony for the 10th president of Luther College.
Carlson began serving as Luther College president July 1st, so this is her first class of incoming students. She is not a stranger to a college campus, however, having graduated from St. Olaf and having earned an M.A., M. Phil. and Ph.D. in English and comparative literature from Columbia University. She has also taught and worked at St. Olaf, the University of Dubuque, Yale University and St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana.
Speaking to staff members, professors, alumni and retirees on Thursday afternoon, Carlson stressed that Luther College is "a distinctive, extraordinary community" in which people are dedicated to serving the common good.
