(Comment by decorahnews.com's Paul Scott)
I will admit that one of the reasons we decided to use a drone to cover the Nordic Fest Parade this year was because we heard the idea and we thought, "That would be SO COOL!"
But once we made the decision to go ahead, we started thinking instead about all the things that could possibly go wrong--very publicly wrong--before a huge crowd of not just adults but young children.
It was the same feeling we had just before flying to Afghanistan to cover the deployment of Decorah soldiers there, or when we wrote stories about the search for a new Luther College president or about the issues involving Winneshiek Medical Center two years ago.
We're happy to announce everything involving the drone went far better than we could have hoped for--thanks to our new best friend, Chris Gegax.
Maybe one of these days we will have failure instead of success, but we think it's important that we try these projects as a way of following through on our commitment to do whatever we can do to bring you the best possible coverage of news in Decorah.
What's next? We don't know. But we do know that whatever new projects come up, there is one thing that won't change--our commitment to bringing you Decorah news first, fast and free.
