In 2011 volunteers from the Raptor Resource Project captured a young female bald eagle in Decorah and outfitted her with a solar assisted satellite transmitter, so it could track the bird's movement.
What they discovered surprised them--a month later she set off for northern Minnesota and Wisconsin. "D1," as the bird was named, returned to the Decorah area before the end of the year.
In 2012 D1 set off in early spring and spent three months in Polar Bear Provincial Park on Hudson Bay in Canada. D1 returned to the Decorah area once again before year end. The pattern was repeated in 2013.
Raptor Resource Project director Bob Anderson says the pattern seems to be repeating this year, as well. D1 set off from the Elkader area on May 27th and once again entered Polar Bear Provincial Park on June 13th.
Asks Anderson, "Who would have ever guessed that an Iowa eagle would venture each summer to this remote place high above the tree line?"
