Should Wiltgen Construction be allowed to sell the limestone it wants to crush at the Quandahl sand quarry on Canoe Valley Road? That turned into the major issue at Monday's Winneshiek County Board meeting to discuss the application by Wiltgen Construction for a modification of the existing conditional use permit for the quarry.
Former county supervisor Steve Mc Cargar told current supervisors on Monday the clause allowing outside sale of the limestone would be a "substantial" change. "The sale of rock is the huge issue," he told the meeting.
Wiltgen Construction's current permit allows the company to only take sand from the quarry. The county's Planning & Zoning Commission voted 7-1 to allow Wiltgen to crush limestone rock at the quarry--but it also added a provision that would allow Wiltgen the right to sell the excess limestone not used at the quarry.
Neighbors complained the change would add more truck traffic to a road that already has issues with dust control.
Supervisors decided they wanted to visit the sand quarry before taking any action on the conditional use permit. They have delayed a vote on the application until next Monday.
