(Thursday's Letter to the Editor by Decorah resident Ellen Cutting stating that schools are not safe has promoted this Letter to the Editor by Ben Lange of Decorah):

In 2010, 2,700 teens age 16-19 died in United States auto accidents. In 2009-2010 (2 years) 18 deaths occurred in schools. In 2012-2013, 28 deaths occurred in schools (this includes Sandy Hook.)  These stats are from the Centers for Disease Control, dosomething.org, and The Washington Post.

While tragic incidents are awful, schools are safe.

Law enforcement, schools, and parents are doing a great job of keeping schools safe.  Drugs, bicycles, nutrition, and automobiles kill many thousands percent more children than school violence incidents.  Part of the reason for school safety is the incredibly well trained professionals in schools, who work closely with emergency management services and the community.
