Luther College has announced details of its Center Stage Series for the 2014-15 season--ten events schedule from September through April.
CSS will lead off with "The Intergalactic Nemesis—Target Earth" on September 13th. The classic old-fashioned radio show follows an intrepid reporter, her assistant and a mysterious librarian as they travel across the galaxy to save the Earth from an invading force of sludge monsters.
On September 25th the Minneapolis dance troupe Rhythmic Circus visits Luther. A seven-piece funk band accompanies a percussive dance group that taps, shuffles and stomps across the stage.
On October 4th the Japanese drum group San Jose Taiko will perform. The group's performances have grown to incorporate the beat of world rhythms, including African, Brazilian, Filipino, Latin and jazz.
L.A. Theatre Works will perform the crime drama "In the Heat of the Night" on October 24th. The story is set in the 1960s and follows a Southern white sheriff and an African American detective as unwilling partners in a high-profile homicide.
On November 6th the a cappella quartet Anonymous 4 will perform. The group is known for its unearthly vocal blend and virtuosic ensemble singing.
On November 14th, the "Rock Stars of Classical Music," Sybarite5, will perform an eclectic repertoire ranging from Stravinsky and Dvorak to contemporary anthems by Radiohead and Arcade Fire.
The Center Stage Series will resume February 6th with a performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by the Dance Alive National Ballet. Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is performed in classical ballet style.
On February 20th the 1920s flapper jazz group "Hot Sardines" will perform, featuring a blustery brass lineup, a virtuoso rhythm section and a French lead singer.
Two of South Africa's major musical icons, Hugh Masakela and Vusi Mahlasela, will perform March 5th in a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the end of apartheid.
The Center Stage Series ends April 11th with a performance of "All Recipes Are Home." The performance draws on interviews with Decorah locals, food lovers and farmers, and marries it to the history of land in Iowa to tell the story of food and home in our own backyard.
