Work on Winneshiek County frac mining ordinance is heading into the home stretch

Winneshiek County supervisors Dennis Karlsbroten and Dean Thompson say they're getting close to wrapping up their study of the frac sand mining issue.

The two supervisors on Monday praised the work of Allamakee County Zoning Administrator Tom Blake in helping to craft that county's new frac sand mining ordinance--and said Winneshiek County's ordinance would be similar to the Allamakee County ordinance.

Karlsbroten says "Dean and I feel we will soon be at the end of our fact-finding."  He said one bit of research still is on their "To Do" list--an airplane flight over frac sand mining areas in Winona, Houston and Clayton counties.
