Decorah resident creates "Insta-Poems"

Posted: Sun, Jun 8, 2014 8:39 PM

This coming Saturday morning in Decorah, the Winneshiek Farmers Market will feature flowers and produce and craft items--and quickly written poetry.

Decorah resident Andrea Becker will be selling "Inst-poems."  Pay her five dollars, tell her what subject you want her to write about--and five minutes later she will present you with your own typewritten personalized poem.

Becker started the "Insta-poems" last July at Decorah's farmers market, but is now also visiting the farmers market in Lanesboro.

"Some people have very specific ideas of topics (for their poems)," she tells decorahnews.com.  Since her booth is at two farmers markets, many of the ideas involve gardens or produce or farming.  Others involve people or animals or other topics.

Becker took a class through Kirkwood College in which students would write in their notebooks for a short period of time--and then share those writings with friends, writers and poets.  "I always enjoyed that," she says of her writing.
