Winneshiek Medical Center's Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Department is offering two summer programs for young athletes--both with registration deadlines of this Friday.
The "S.P.E.E.D. program" is for high school athletes of any sport. It meets Mondays and Thursdays, June 9th through July 10th from 4:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. at the hospital. The classes focus on speed, agility and plyometric instruction. Students learn how explosive movements of intense exercise can improve their performance with quick movements as well as overall endurance. There will be a strong focus in enhancing footwork and final kick to reach the end zone or the finish line. The fee for this class is $50 per student and includes a free t-shirt.
"Sports EXCEL" for middle school athletes meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 10th through July 10th from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. for fifth and sixth graders and from 10:15 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. for seventh and eighth graders. The classes focus on strength, flexibility and speed with an emphasis on proper form and lifting technique. Students will experience an introduction to circuit training and core programs as well as strength training. Cost per student is $50 and includes a free t-shirt.
All courses are lead by athletic trainer Kendra Kerr and physical therapist Ryan Burras, who both specialize in improving the performance of young athletes.
