The UNiversity of Iowa's new "Mobile Museum" visited Decorah and Luther College two weeks ago, coinciding with a meeting of a state archeology group.
But if you missed the museum while it was in Decorah, you'll soon get another chance to see it. The museum will return to Northeast Iowa May 29th and May 30th, making a stop at Effigy Mounds and possibly some school visits.
Said State Archaeologist John Doershuk, "The sheer number and significance of the archaeological sites in Northeast Iowa made a visit to Allamakee County a natural choice for one of the Museum's maiden voyages."
The museum-on-wheels features exhibits that focus on three very different eras in Iowa's history. "Iowa's Ice Age Giants" explores the great mammals that roamed the state during the last ice age and their sudden extinction. "Glenwood: Iowa's Ancient Agriculturalists" tells the story of the Glenwood culture centered in the Loess Hills and their connections to the Iowa landscape through agriculture. "Cornerstones" focuses on the founding of Iowa and writing of its constitution, the building of the Old Capitol building, and the creation of the University of Iowa.
