Eight local clergy met with Decorah Community School officials, including Superintendent Mike Haluska and High School Associate Principal and Activities Director Adam Riley, on Tuesday to discuss a proposal before the School Board related to after school activities on Wednesday afternoons.
There has been a long standing policy regarding no after school activities at the middle school level on Wednesday afternoons to allow for religious education programs within the community. At last month's School Board meeting a proposal was put forward to end that policy and open up Wednesday afternoons for after school programs. At the April meeting administrators and the Board were under the impression that religious education activities no longer happened in that afternoon time slot.
Although there was not a formal recommendation from the clergy group, Father Phillip Gibbs of St. Benedict's Parish said that the group has now expressed concern to school officials and confirmed that numerous religious education activities do happen directly after school on Wednesdays.
The Board is scheduled to discuss the issue at their meeting next Monday night.
