Winneshiek County Celebration of Life is now awarding $200 gasoline cards to area women who are battling cancer. The "Fuel for the Fight" program began last August and has already helped 21 women. Gasoline grants are awarded to area women who are actively pursuing treatment for any form of cancer. Nominated women can only receive one grant per calendar year. The nominee must be female, age of 18 or older, in active treatment for cancer, and either a resident or her family doctor is in Winneshiek County. Nominations can be for oneself or a family member, friend or coworker. A simple nomination form is available pre-printed at Margaret's Clothing store, Winneshiek Medical Center, Gundersen-Decorah Clinic or on-line at https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B5FjNjQJoIeSRDNvTDBvN25IajA/edit
"We are so thrilled with our first six months," said Celebration of Life Board President Margaret Walter. She adds, "It is a new year, and we are increasing our gasoline grants to $200 for nominated women. If you or someone you know is still taking cancer treatment you can re-apply (for a grant) in 2014, even if you received a gasoline grant from us in 2013."
Completed applications need to be mailed to PO BOX 314, Decorah, Iowa 52101 or dropped off at Margaret's Clothing store in Decorah. Nomination forms will be reviewed monthly, and gas card will be sent to the recipient to help offset the expense for traveling to appointments and additional care required.
Winneshiek County Celebration of Life is a community effort to raise money for cancer awareness and prevention. Through business sponsorships, individual donations and memorials, the Winneshiek County area has supported the health of their own mothers and daughters, nieces and sisters, friends and neighbors since 1998. In 2013, Winneshiek County Celebration of Life helped over 50 local women obtain free preventative mammogram screenings.
