Parents learn about changes in school lunch menus

The school lunch program in Decorah has undergoneseveral changes in recent years, with an emphasis on serving kids more fruits, vegetablesand whole grains and less trans fats, according to Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Anne Blocker and DecorahSchool Food Service Director Jane Bullerman.  The two spoke recently with a group of interested parents at John Cline Elementary.

During the program parents and school volunteers had theopportunity to sample new additions to the school lunch menus. The foodssampled included harvest muffins, hummus and vegetables, and purple powerwraps.

"Kids seem to really be enjoying the foods, includingthe extra fresh fruits and vegetables they receive," said Bullerman.  "Our homemade bread is alsoa big hit."

Bullerman also explained that all students are eligible toparticipate in the school breakfast program. School breakfast can be a convenient way to get a child's day off to anutritionally balanced start. Breakfast is available to all students in everybuilding.
