The public is invited to tour the newly renovated auditorium at the Carrie
Lee School on Wednesday, April 9 between 5 and 7 PM. This building was built in 1922 and served as the high school through 1964. It was the junior high and middle school after that. It became known as Carrie Lee Elementary when the new middle school was built in 2007.
At that time, the 1922 building underwent a major renovation, but the
auditorium renovation was left for later...until now. When the opportunity came to renovate the Carrie Lee Auditorium, it was important to honor the history of the building and link the past to the future. This vision was realized by embracing the architecture from the Art Deco era. Designer, Constance Johnson researched the Winneshiek County archives, and incorporated historical and architectural elements of the past into the new design.
Now the Carrie Lee auditorium will be a beautiful Art Deco showplace, with more comfortable and roomier seating, and up-to-date lighting and sound.
The DHS Viking Cafe will provide light appetizer and drink for the opening reception. Come and learn about the history and the renovation of this intimate theater. It will be available to community groups for their use.
