When Winneshiek County's 18-month moratorium on frac sand mining permits was approved, representatives of Winneshiek Protectors, the group that pushed for the moratorium, told representatives from Bruening Rock Products and fron Olson Explosives that they would be included in the group's discussion.
Bruening Rock Products president Keith Bruening told Winneshiek County supervisors on Monday that 12 months later "We haven't gotten a phone call yet." Bruening spoke briefly to supervisors, reassuring them that "I don't have any problems with the (county) board," but saying that he has had no contact from Winneshiek Protectors in the last year and none at all from the Community Rights Alliance of Winneshiek County, the second anti-frac sand mining group.
Bruening also told supervisors he had been told Winneshiek Protectors has "a hidden agenda" to stop all open pit mining in Winneshiek County.
Winneshiek County Board Chair John Logsdon reassured Bruening that the county board favored a "balanced approach." Supervisor Dennis Karlsbroten told Bruening, "We need sand, we need gravel."
