Emergency responders have had slight problems in the past locating people who call in for help while on the trails. Winneshiek County and City of Decorah officials think 9-1-1 markers on the trail might be a good addition. The markers could display the mile location on the trails, allowing emergency responders to know where to head. In the past, emergency responders have been called to the Prairie Farmer Trail near Ridgeway—but had to head down the trail in both directions since both callers didn't know their exact locations.
But the situation is not as simple as putting up signs. City and county officials will have to figure out how to get information in the computers at the Law Enforcement Center dispatch desk, showing emergency responders where road accesses to the two trails are located and any other notes that would be helpful. That has governmental officials saying the system might not be fully implemented until next year.
