The deadline has passed for Republicans and Democrats to file nomination papers to run for county offices this fall--and there will be two contested elections and three uncontested elections.
Democrat Barbara Massman will face Republican Floyd Ashbacher in one county supervisor race, while Democrat John Beard will face Republican Dennis Karlsbroten in the other county supervisor race.
Winneshiek County Treasurer Wayne Walter and County Attorney Andy Van der Maaten filed nomination papers for re-election and will run unopposed. County Recorder Teresa Bockman is expected to file nomination papers to run as an independent. No one else has indicated an interest in running for Recorder.
If someone wants to run for a county office without any political party identification, they can still file nomination papers up until August 27th. However, there will be no county primary election in the spring because none of the positions on the ballot have more than one candidate per political party. There will, however, be primaries for state and federal positions.
