The Decorah City Council has accepted bids from Skyline Construction on $2,874,118 worth of installing sewer and water mains to the Decorah Business Park.
City council members Monday night approved Sections #1 and #3 of Skyline's bid, but delayed action on Section #2, which involved the possible spending of $78,814
The action came following a public hearing at which Decorah resident Daniel Baldwin urged the city council not to do the project, saying "This is not the time for a $4.7 million sewer project." But city council member Chuck Lore said the city had first talked about doing the project in 2003 and "we're just trying to get it finished." Baldwin said the project would lead to "significantly higher property taxes" and argued the project should not come at a time when the Decorah School District might be proposing a new school construction bond issue.
