Early retirement benefit approved for classified Decorah Schools staff

After considerable debate the Decorah Community School Board approved an early retirement package for classified staff. Most of the concerns related to the question of whether or not the offering would actually result in a financial benefit to the district. Ultimately it was not clear if the offering the package would provide a benefit, but most felt it would do so if the percent of contracted salary paid as an incentive was reduced from the originally proposed  50 percent to 35 percent. The motion passed on a 4-1 vote.

The formula for eligibility is based on years of service (at least 15), age (over 55), and the sum of employee's age and years of service being at least 80.

Board members were clear that financial benefit to the district is the only basis for such a decision, and that such a program cannot be construed to imply any such further programs will be offered. Eligible employees must apply by April 9.
