Jim asks Mr. Answer Person: "Are the water and sewer lines connecting residences with the mains close enough so that warm waste water will help keep water lines from freezing?"
Mr. Answer Person says: "Not only aren't the sewer lines close enough to the water lines in most cases, but some sewer lines have now begun having problems.
We haven't said much about this in the last week or two, but it's a good time to repeat that it's a wise idea to keep a very thin stream of water running in your home. This helps not only the water lines but the sewer lines as well."
Joanne e-mails: "Why can the (Decorah) street department get the two outer lanes on Short cleared of snow and ice but seem to have a hard time remembering that there is now that turning lane to be cleared also? Many times this winter the block between Paine Street and Division Street. has had snow and ice on it while the outer lanes are clear. Lots of people use that lane when going to work to Deco."
Mr. Answer Person says: "I'm still amazed at the high quality job the Street Department has been doing under trying conditions this winter. I know it's difficult driving around town, but that has more to do with all the snow we've gotten and the cold temperatures we've had when there isn't snow. So if you have a specific question about snow clearing, it's best to directly call the Street Department at 382-2157 and talk with them. Remember to be polite! And remember Mr. Answer Person doesn't own a snow plow, so it doesn't matter if I'm on your side!
