Sheriff's Department is warning about a new scam

The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department says several area residents have received phone calls from someone pretending to be from Microsoft.

The person says they have noticed your computer needs several security updates to be current.  But if you grant the caller access to your computer, he can download all of your files, create new passwords and look for your personal financial information.  They will access your bank accounts and transfer out all those funds; will make numerous small charges to your credit card until it is frozen; and then will use your personal information to apply for other credit cards.

The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department is stressing that Microsoft will NEVER monitor computers to see if they are out of date.
