Here is background information on Paula Carlson, the person nominated to be the next president of Luther College:
--She is a l976 graduate of St. Olaf College, graduating Phi Beta Kappa.
--She earned the M.A., M. Phil. and Ph.D. in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University with a dissertation on the medieval English poems "Piers Plowman" and "Pearl."
--She and her husband, Rev. Dr. Thomas Schattauer, a professor of liturgics and dean of the Chapel at Wartburg Theological Seminary, are the parents of Peter and Anna, who both attended St. Olaf College.
--She is the co-editor of a four-volume series of books called "Listening for God: Contemporary Literature and the Life of Faith,"
--Currently vice president for mission at St. Olaf College, Carlson has also held positions as vice president and liaison to the St. Olaf College Board of Regents.
--Prior to working at St. Olaf, she was a Professor of English and Director of the Wendt Center for Character Education at the University of Dubuque. Carlson led the development of the Wendt Center, which includes interdisciplinary curricular and co-curricular programs in ethics and character formation in the college, graduate school and seminary. She administered a new college core curriculum, coordinating course planning, course and program assessment and faculty development for interdisciplinary components.
