Community Rights Alliance of Winneshiek County representative Steve Luse on Monday morning presenting a proposed ordinance that would ban frac sand mining in the county.
Luse told county supervisors they should not approve an ordinance regulating frac sand mining because that would permit it. "We rebuke the idea that legalizing frac sand mining will prevent it," he told supervisors.
Luse said corporations don't care about the quality of life of Winneshiek County residents, so his group's proposed ordinance would present "an alterante view" of what should be done.
Frac sand mining, said Luse, "violates the rights of Winneshiek County residents." He says his group will begin a petition drive asking that the proposed ordinance be adopted. He promised to return to the county board next month for a progress report in the petition drive and set a goal of getting the ordinance adopted before the 4th of July.
