Carver grant will help purchase high-fidelity equipment to enhance Luther's existing simulation lab.

Luther College's Nursing Department has received a $170,000 grant from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust to fund the purchase of high-fidelity simulation mannequins and their associated audio-visual components.  The college will begin the purchasing process this spring, with plans to install the equipment in the summer, and open the simulation center in fall 2014.

"Simulation in health care is cutting-edge technology to help prepare clinicians for increasingly complex patient care in the 21st century," said Luther associate professor of nursing Jayme Nelson. "Imagine being able to provide nursing care to a critically ill patient in the Luther College simulation lab without fear of patient injury or harm," added Nelson. The equipment will give nursing students the ability to assess, intervene and evaluate the actions of their nursing care as if their patient was in a real health care setting.
