The Winneshiek Protectors group has presented the Winneshiek County Board with suggestions on amendments to six sections of the county's comprehensive plan dealing with "metallic and non-metallic mining."
The document is the same document presented earlier to the county's Planning & Zoning Commission. Winneshiek Protectors spokesperson Dick Jansen says the Planning & Zoning Commission has indicated it will discuss the proposed amendments in February.
One of the suggestions from Winneshiek Protectors is that mining operations should be required to have "buffer zones" around their property. Jansen said that although the document presented to county supervisor included recommendations about the width of the buffer zones, the particulars of the buffer zones would be up to supervisors, but Winneshiek Protectors felt the county's comprehensive plan needs language creating the buffers.
