For several years the City of Decorah has given $14,000 to Northeast Iowa Community Action to partially pay for that agency's program that subsidizes taxi cab rides for seniors.
This year the Decorah City Council did not receive a request for such funds. NEICAC Executive Director Mary Ann Humpal says the request was supposed to be delivered to the city council by a representative of Hometown Taxi.
Decorah Finance Committee Chair Paul Wanless asked several questions about the program on Tuesday night, including why Decorah's other taxi service, Sarge and Marge's, isn't involved in the program. Humpal tells decorahnews.com that there are hoops to jump through to qualify for the program, including getting drug tests completed. She says Sarge & Marge's could also participate in the program if it meets all the requirements.
Wanless requested that someone from NEICAC appear before city council members to discuss the program. Humpal says she will appear at a future city council meeting to answer any questions.
