Former Decorah attorney David Strand sentenced to 20 years in prison

Former Decorah attorney David Strand was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Tuesday.

Strand had earlier entered guilty pleas to four counts of first degree theft and one count of third degree theft:

1)  Strand was accused of misappropriating over $10,000 from the Shiloh Deal estate from July 20, 2009 through June 1, 2010.  The first degree theft charge is a class C felony.

2)  Strand was accused of misappropriating over $10,000 from the Shiloh Deal estate from October 28, 2010 through February 28, 2011--a Class C felony.

3)  Strand was accused of taking more than $10,000 from Dennis Steinlage on or around April 4, 2012--a Class C felony.

4)  Strand was accused of taking over $10,000 from Darlyne Hackman from April 12th through April 23rd of 2013.  The first degree theft charges is a class C felony.

5)  Strand was accused of disposing of estate property worth less than $1,000 on September 12th, 2012.  The third degree theft charge is an aggravated misdemeanor.

On Tuesday Strand was sentenced to 10 years in prison on each of the first four counts and two years in prison on the fifth charge.  The judge ordered some of the prison terms to run concurrently with others, but set the overall prison sentence at 20 years.  Fines totaling $5,400 in the case were suspended, although Strand was ordered to make restitution.

Bond has been set at $65,000 if Strand appeals Tuesday's sentencing.
