Decorah man's suggestion used by Des Moines Register

A Decorah man's suggestion has been used by the Des Moines Register to recognize those people who work during the Christmas holiday.

John Carver made the suggestion to the newspaper, which published his suggestion on Christmas Eve:

"A rose to Iowans whose jobs will keep them away from family and friends during the holidays. It is easy to get the idea that the whole world goes on hiatus this time of year, and it's true that offices, shops and streets will be largely abandoned starting tonight.

Still, you don't have to think very hard to come up with examples of workers who will be on the job, from health care workers and convenience store clerks to police officers and firefighters and livestock farmers.  The list includes utility workers who keep the water, gas and electricity flowing and airline crews who get travelers home for the holidays. (We would be remiss if we did not mention the reporters, photographers, copy editors, online and production crews who will deliver the news to Register readers).

So, while those of us who are blessed with the ability to take off work settle in for some holiday cheer, keep in mind those who will be on the job and thank them for what they do.
"
