Winneshiek County Public Health is encouraging the public to take 12 steps to stay healthy during the holidays. The agency says these tips will make your time enjoyable over the holiday season and in the upcoming year:
1. Wash your hands often—this is the most important step to avoid getting sick or spreading it to others. It is best to use soap and water and rub them for at least 20 seconds. Cover your cough. Hand washing does save lives.
2. Stay warm-Stay dry and dress warmly using several layers of loose-fitting, tightly woven clothing.
3. Manage stress—keep your commitments and spending in check. Balance work, home and play. Keep a relaxed and positive outlook. Be sure to get plenty of sleep.
4. Travel safely-watch and listen to weather reports. Wear your seat belt.
5. Don't drink and drive or let others drink and drive. Whenever anyone drives drunk, they put everyone on the road in danger.
6. Be smoke-free-avoid smoking and breathing other people's smoke.
7. Get check-ups and vaccinations. Vaccinations help prevent diseases and save lives. Schedule a visit with your health care provider for a yearly exam. Early screenings can help find potential problems.
8. Watch the kids—children are at high risk for injuries. Keep a watchful eye on your kids while playing and eating. Develop rules about acceptable and safe behaviors.
9. Prevent injuries.--Injuries can happen anywhere, and some often around the holidays. Be aware of your surroundings. Don't leave candles burning.
10. Handle and prepare food safely-- Avoid cross contamination. Cook foods to their proper temperature. Refrigerate food promptly.
11. Eat healthy, and be active—Choose fresh fruit as a festive and sweet substitute. Be active for at least 2 ½ hours a week. Kids and teens should be active 1 hour per day. Eat foods in moderation.
12. Practice fire safety. Most residential fires occur during the winter months, so don't leave fireplaces, space heaters, stoves, or candles unattended. Have an emergency plan and practice it regularly.
