The Humane Society of Northeast Iowa has won $10,000 in a contest sponsored by the Petco Foundation and "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."
The contest was open to animal welfare groups. It asked them to submit success stories about animals they have rescued. 4,500 entries were received and just 33 entries received an award.
HSNEI President Kim Powell wrote a story that focused on the adoption of a dog named "Jake" that was found wandering the outskirts of Decorah in April. It was apparent that Jake had been abused and chained up constantly at his previous home. Despite ample reason to distrust humans, Jake remained a sweet and loving dog. Jake was taken in by a caring home with four canine brothers and sisters.
