Sheriff's Department warns of scam that targeted county resident

Posted: Fri, Dec 20, 2013 9:36 AM

The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department says a county resident was the target of a telephone scam and is warning the rest of the public not to fall for it.

Two callers threatened the resident that they had to pay an outstanding "Pay Day Loan" or face arrest.  The callers stated the county resident owed the $8,400 loan plus additional fees for being overdue.

One of the callers even presented himself to the county resident as "Attorney Rick Harris," but when the resident asked questions and refused to provide financial information, the callers hung up.

Sheriff's deputies say the county resident made the correct choices and did not provide any personal information and did not verify information provided by the callers.

If anyone has any similar incidents, they are asked to call the Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department at (563) 382-4268.
