Harley Refsal featured on Public Television's "Craft in America"

Decorah resident and woodcarver Harley Refsal is featured on the newest episode of Public Television's "Craft in America," but you're going to have to do a little work in order to see the episode.

The episode airs nationally on PSB at 8:00 p.m. Friday.  But with many public television stations airing Christmas specials this month, not everyone is airing the episode.  Iowa Public Television, for instance, will air the episode at 2:00 in the morning on Monday—and it's only Mediacom cable customers who can see it then because IPTV shuts down over-the-air broadcasting from midnight to 5:00 a.m. in order to save money.

Viewers of Wisconsin Public Television will have a better chance.  The program won't air Friday night, but WPT will air it at 12:30 p.m. this Saturday.

In Refsal's segment, which comes first in the program, he explains "Many holiday traditions, Christian and non-Christian, come from the winter solstice which was a pagan holiday that marked the start of the solar year and celebrated light and the rebirth of the sun. Santa, the Christmas tree, gifts and special meals all had their beginnings in the winter solstice."
